I want to keep you updated with the Princeton admission status. Our department has happily decided to offer you an admission! So congratulations! But this is not official yet. At Princeton, departmental admissions have to be approved by the University. But it is unlikely things will change at this point. I believe at some point next week (hopefully before Chinese Spring Festival), you will hear the official good news!
I have also nominated you for a prestigious fellowship. We don't know the results of that yet for a while.
I understand that this is offer letter season. Given your credential, you'll be likely to get offers from many wonderful schools and programs.
I want to express my sincere interest here of having you as one of our students. I truly believe that we have a very matching interest. Given the group of faculties here at Princeton, I believe that you will be in a place that can offer you the right combination of education and resources.
If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me. I am here to try my best to support your decision process. And ultimately, I do hope that you make the right decision and come to our department!
The letter from stanford CS admission commitee
-----------------------------------------------------
Congratulations! We are pleased to inform you that you have been admitted to the Stanford University Computer Science Department’s Ph.D. program beginning Autumn Quarter 2007-2008.
You will receive an information packet in the mail from the main Stanford University Graduate Admissions Office around mid-March. The packet will include the Guide for New Graduate Students which can also be viewed online (please see the link to the Guide at http://registrar.stanford.edu/newadmit/). The packet will also include a Student Housing booklet. Student Housing information can also be viewed online at the Housing Assignments Office website: http://www.stanford.edu/dept/hds/has/index.html. All offers of admission are contingent on the verification of the fulfillment of admission requirements by the Registrar’s Office.
As you probably know, entering our Ph.D. program provides you with the opportunity to join a dynamic research environment in a top-ranked department. We offer full financial support for the first three academic years (provided satisfactory academic progress is maintained and you align with a Computer Science research advisor). This support typically comes in the form of a research assistantship and for students making good progress in the program, it extends beyond the first three years to degree conferral. Some students are awarded fellowships for one or more years, which carry the same stipend as research assistantships but generally are not tied to a specific research project. The program requires that all Ph.D. students serve as a teaching assistant for two quarters. On occasion students who are not making good academic progress, have not aligned with a Computer Science research adviser, or whose Computer Science advisers have a gap in research funding are supported by a teaching assistantship. However, in most cases support is provided through a research assistantship or fellowship for the duration of the program, with the exception of the two required quarters as a teaching assistant.
Research assistants, teaching assistants, and fellows all receive the same financial package: a monthly stipend/salary of approximately $2,241 per month for 9 months, and tuition for the required 9 units of registration per quarter ($20,169 for the 2006-2007 academic year). Therefore, your financial package for each year will be worth approximately $43,029 (2007-2008 increments yet to be determined).
After the first year, summer research or teaching assistantships are usually available, but they must be negotiated individually between you and your adviser (for research) or the departmental education division (for teaching), once you have enrolled. Visa permitting, a number of local corporations and research labs offer summer job opportunities.
Financial support for research assistantships and fellowships comes from a variety of sources including Stanford University, private industry, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, and other agencies. Of course, if you receive an external fellowship, we encourage you to accept it to minimize the effect on Stanford’s resources. We automatically supplement all fellowships as necessary so that you receive the same stipend as our internally funded research and teaching assistants. If you receive external funding, we ask that you inform us as soon as possible via e-mail to kathi@cs.stanford.edu, for departmental planning purposes.
We are very proud of our Computer Science Ph.D. program and hope that you will join us this fall. Please notify us of your decision no later than April 15, 2007. If your reply is not received by this date, you automatically forfeit the offer of admission and financial support. Please see the attached document “Resolution Regarding Graduate Scholars, Fellows, Trainees and Assistants” from the Council of Graduate Schools for more information about the deadline.
Most importantly, there will be a Computer Science Department Ph.D. Admit Weekend to welcome you to Stanford which will be held on campus Friday, March 9th and Saturday, March 10th, 2007. We will be posting the schedule of activities online and will send the link to you soon. There will be activities starting in the early afternoon on Friday, and all day on Saturday. Please see the attached document containing more detailed information about reserving your accommodations for the weekend. We sincerely hope that you can attend our Ph.D. Admit Weekend, and we look forward to meeting you there.
Congratulations again on your admission to Stanford’s Computer Science Ph.D. program.
